Genetically modified Animal Cloning (MONSANTO PIGS) part 3

Genetically_modified_Animal_Cloning_(MONSANTO_PIGS)_part_3The American biotechnology firm, Monsanto, has applied for a patent for pig breeding in 160 countries. The patent is for specific parts of the more... genetic material of pigs which Monsanto's genetic researchers have decoded. If this patent is granted, pig breeding would be possible with the approval of the company. Farmers and breeders are naturally alarmed because these genes have long existed in the great majority of their pigs. Using DNA tests they can prove that there is no new invention in the patent applications but that, instead, granting this patent would be to allow a part of nature to fall into the hands of a single company. Monsanto's influence on the patent offices is huge. If the patent is approved, money will have to be paid to Monsanto for every pig in the world carrying this genetic marker. This has long been the case for certain feedstuffs, such as genetically modified maize. Many farmers in the US have already become dependent on the company. It is not merely a question of money, however, but also a question of the risk posed to consumers. In America, as in Europe, cases of infertility in animals fed with genetically modified maize are becoming increasingly common. No-one yet knows what effects such products are having on humans.

Genetically modified Animal Cloning (Animal Farm) Prgm 3 part 3 final

Genetically_modified_Animal_Cloning_(Animal_Farm)_Prgm_3_part_3_finalThe final programme down on Animal Farm looks at how genetic technologies already impact on our more... day-to-day lives. Charmayne James, one of the US's more... most successful female rodeo riders, talks about how she has cloned her champion steed, Scamper. He was unable to breed naturally because he was gelded at a young age. Charmayne introduces us to Scamper and his newly cloned twin, Clayton, to show us just how similar they are.

Leaf sectioning The film introduces the project involving goats that have been implanted with a gene to make them produce spider silk proteins in their milk. Spider silk is amongst the strongest and most flexible material known. It is used for the production of everything from bullet-proof jackets to parachutes and airbags. Featherless chicken Then, of course, there are the pigs that have been engineered to help solve the global pollution crisis… Transgenic cassava Like it or not, one thing this series shows is that genetic modification experiments are well under way. Perhaps it's time drop the knee-jerk reaction and engage in a little more serious debate about what is and what isn't acceptable in terms of animal and environmental welfare.

Genetically modified Animal Cloning (Animal Farm) Prgm 2 part 3

Genetically_modified_Animal_Cloning_(Animal_Farm)_Prgm_2_part_3The second programme focuses on the latest techniques in genetic manipulation that stand to directly benefit our health. Amongst the animal line-up this week are the sheep that are used to grow human organs for transplants and the plasma cows that could solve the threat of bioterrorism.

Amongst the animal line-up this week are the sheep that are used to grow human organs for transplants and the plasma cows that could solve the threat of bioterrorism. A transgenic greenhouse The film also looks at a product called MySkin – a new tissue engineering technique that takes a small sample of human skin and encourages the cells within it to multiply and produce new skin. The technique is already being used to treat people who have suffered serious burns, but, as co-presenters Giles and Olivia discover, it could have a future use in growing whole body parts – noses, ears and even vital organs like livers and bladders. A transgenic sheep Giles, however, decides to stick with his own nose.

Janjaweed #6

Janjaweed__#6THE DEVIL CAME ON HORSEBACK exposes the tragedy taking place in Darfur as seen through the eyes of an American witness who has since returned to the US to take action to stop it. Using the exclusive photographs and first hand testimony of former U.S. Marine Captain Brian Steidle, THE DEVIL CAME ON HORSEBACK takes the viewer on an emotionally charged journey into the heart of Darfur, Sudan, where an Arab run government is systematically executing a plan to rid the province of it’s black African citizens. As an official military observer, Steidle had access to parts of the country that no journalist could penetrate. He was unprepared for what he would witness and experience, including being fired upon, taken hostage, and being unable to intervene to save the lives of young children. Ultimately frustrated by the inaction of the international community, Steidle resigned and returned to the US to expose the images and stories of lives systematically destroyed.

There is a lot of proof showing how Gm crops are causing all kinds of problems. i post this for people to see what is going on. Thanks for commenting. The first programme starts by looking at the outlandish creatures that can be produced by sex alone. From the cows bound by twice the muscle mass of their ordinary bovine counterparts, to the chickens that are completely devoid of feathers. All of which are achieved through simple traditional animal breeding or artificial selection. Super salmon The film looks at the high tech production of giant GM salmon that could help save our dwindling fish stocks, and GM rice that has been modified to contain carotenoids, precursors of vitamin A, that could help prevent common developing world deficiencies that can lead to blindness. A double muscle rump Olivia is a convert, but her co-presenter Giles reserves judgement. He finds that the muscle-bound meat doesn't cut the mustard on the flavour stakes.

Unreported World~Sri Lanka Killing For Peace 2007

Unreported_World~Sri_Lanka_Killing_For_Peace_2007Reporter Sandra Jordan and director Siobhan Sinnerton travel to northern Sri Lanka and uncover the government's heavy-handed tactics in the latest stage of the country's 30-year civil war. As the first foreign journalists to visit the city of Jaffna, Jordan and Sinnerton discover that the government has abandoned the ceasefire signed in 2002 in favour of a military campaign against the rebel Tamil Tigers - with many innocent civilians paying the price. The Sri Lankan Civil War is an ongoing conflict on the island-nation of Sri Lanka. Since the year 1983, there has been on-and-off civil war, predominantly between the government and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE, also known as the Tamil Tigers), a separatist militant organization who fight to create an independent state named Tamil Eelam in the North and East of the island. The origins of the Sri Lankan civil war lie in sharp disagreements over language, access to universities, and riots between Sri Lanka's majority Sinhalese, mostly Buddhist, and minority Tamil, mostly Hindu, community. These gradually but continuously escalated from the 1920s until the outbreak of civil war in 1983.
