In 2006, PETA openly monitored Ringling's traveling units. The footage shows some of the cruelty that we documented, including the fact that elephants with stiff joints and chronic lameness were kept on the road and aggressive use of the bullhook. One scene depicts a Ringling trainer inflicting a bloody bullhook wound behind the left ear of an elephant. The elephant responds with a series of squeals. A bullhook resembles a fireplace poker and has a sharp steel hook and point.

His lyrics cover topics like oppression, ignorance, empowerment, respect, and equality—all of which pertain to the animal rights movement, so naturally we couldn’t pass up the chance to pick his brain when we met up with him a while back. For nearly 10 months in 2002 and early 2003, a PETA investigator went undercover at an Iams contract testing laboratory and discovered a dark and sordid secret beneath the wholesome image of the dog- and cat-food manufacturer: dogs gone crazy from intense confinement to barren steel cages and cement cells, dogs left piled on a filthy paint-chipped floor after having chunks of muscle hacked from their thighs; dogs surgically debarked; horribly sick dogs and cats languishing in their cages, neglected and left to suffer with no veterinary care. Iams lied to PETA with promises to improve the conditions for animals in its contract laboratories, even assuring us that enrichment programs were already in place, but our undercover investigator saw otherwise. She fought for six months to have a single cheap, rubber toy placed in each cold, lonely kennel. This is Iams’ idea of enrichment. Our video footage shows Iams representatives touring the facility and witnessing dogs’ endless circling in barren cells, sweltering in the summer heat. Iams knew the truth yet did nothing to protect the animals. The dogs and cats in Iams’ tests are no different from our dogs and cats at home when it comes to deserving companionship, play, a stimulating environment, and the right not to be tormented in painful experiments. Luckily, caring consumers know that advances in nutrition don’t have to come at the expense of animals in labs. Help PETA force Iams to end these painful and unnecessary tests, as many compassionate companies have already done.

The Stop Shopping UK Tour is a temporary traveling intervention featuring performance artists and and anti-shoppers who question and interrupt the usual patterns of consumption. Often they perform in contested public space or right in the heart of corporate chain stores, where the "shopping experience" is most ritualized. The core artists— Ange Taggart, William Talen and Andrew Lynn— intensify the secular rituals of consumption to the point of ecstatic fervour. They pray to cat food, sermonize against sweatshops, and solemnly push empty shopping trolleys down supermarket aisles.

A little info on the American branch of Stop Huntington Animal Cruelty (SHAC) and the SHAC 7. Under the Animal Enterprise Protection Act the SHAC 7 were sent to jail. We might see an increase in such convictions since the Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act was passed and that law gives broader protections to animal enterprises. Both laws carry provisions that say non violent acts are not to be prosecuted, yet that was ignored in the case of the SHAC 7. Will the same happen in the future? On November 30, 2004, The New York Times broke the story of what it called "grisly" animal abuse at the world's largest glatt kosher slaughterhouse, AgriProcessors Inc. The story, based on a disturbing undercover investigation, received wide coverage in the mainstream media and remains the biggest scandal in the kosher meat industry in recent memory. For many in the Jewish community, the seriousness of these abuses and kosher authorities' failure to denounce them have raised fundamental questions about the consumption of meat. This video takes on those questions. Narrator Jonathan Safran Foer is the author of Everything Is Illuminated, which won the National Jewish Book Award for Fiction and The Guardian's First Book Award and is the basis for a feature film starring Elijah Wood.
