Experiment: Reading a Saab Viggen Book
I have watched vids of records playing - a ruse to get a song onto YT etc. So I thought I would try another angle - play some Motorhead (a song that almost sounds like he's singing 'Shot You Down') while I turn pages in the Robert F Dorr book on the Saab Viggen.

Mr Grumpy B25 Mitchell at Duxford
The next in this impromptu series of scenes from Duxford. I had posted some of these before but in not quite such good quality. This was filmed back in 1999 with my analog camcorder onot VHS and now as an avi via my under-TV external hard drive recorder.

Hunter @ Duxford
Ex-Swiss AF Hawker Hunter prepares to take off @ IWM Duxford. Sorry about the camera shake, I was walking fast and had the camcorder on a longish zoom to capture as much as I could before the plane trundled off.
This was back in 1999, a nice sunny day to visit one of the best air museums in the world. Next clip will be the take-off. Love these planes!

McDonnell Douglas YC-15
Precursor to the C-17, the YC-15 incorporated a supercritical wing, the result of NASA research carried out by the already famous Richard Whitcomb. This wing design dramatically lowers transonic wave drag by as much as 30% compared to more conventional profiles, while at the same time offering excellent low-speed lift. It also uses externally-blown flaps to increase lift. This system uses double-slotted flaps to direct part of the jet exhaust downwards, while the rest of the exhaust passed through the flap and then followed the downward curve due to the Coanda effect.

C130 LAPES
Low Altitude Parachute Extraction System (LAPES) is a tactical military airlift delivery method where a fixed wing cargo aircraft can deposit supplies when landing is not an option in an area that is too small to accurately parachute supplies from a high altitude.

A C130 performing a Low Altitude Parachute Extraction.
This method was developed by the US Military in 1967 during the Siege of Khe Sanh in the Vietnam War. It involves loading supplies on a special pallet on a plane. Once a plane reaches the desired drop point, the pilot descends to a very low altitude of typically under 2 m. Once achieved, the cargo hatch is opened and the extraction parachute is deployed; once the parachute catches the wind outside the craft, it pulls the connected supplies out of the plane and on to the ground. Once the delivery is accomplished, the pilot ascends to a normal altitude and returns to base.

Dakotas at low-level?
No these are Russian planes. The Lisunov Li-2, originally designated PS-84 (NATO reporting name Cab), was a license-built version of the Douglas DC-3, produced by the GAZ-84 works near Moscow, and subsequently at GAZ-34 in Tashkent.

SAC B47 Lands James Stewart at the wheel
Nice short clip of James Stewart who was a USAAF B17 pilot lands a SAC B-47 bomber. This hot ship required a braking parachute to stop even on the loooong SAC airfields.

Heroes of the Pacific War
'Dogfights' was one of the best war doc's last year. This snippet covers the naval action in the Pacific - usually the prog was about planes but this one is about warships. Another one covers the hunt for the Bismarck. Look for other vids like this around the web. Better still, if you can, buy the DVD!

Airshow! The mighty C17 Globemaster III slo mo so you can see the flare defence measures etc.
The C-17 takes its name from two previous United States cargo aircraft, the C-74 Globemaster and the C-124 Globemaster II. C-17's thrust reversers can be used in flight at idle-reverse for added drag in maximum-rate descents. The C-17 has broken 22 records for oversized payloads. In RAF service the C-17 has not been given an official designation (e.g. C-130J referred to as Hercules C4 or C5) due to its leased status, but is referred to simply as the C-17. Following the end of the lease period the four aircraft will assume an RAF designation, most likely "Globemaster C1".

Airscho Horroscho Tovarische! Sov Helos Biggest in the World!
Superb slo mo's of the Mil Mi-26 and other giant helo's used to overcome difficult terrain and lack of road/rail in remote facilities etc. Nice glimpse of an underlsung MiG-17(?). I saw one of these giants at Farnborough in the mid-80s, breathtaking.
Hope everyone likes the slo mo which is something you can do with the Sky+ STB. You can get a better view of detail e.g. for modellers, since AFAIK you can't slo mo on LV - could d/l and use VLC video player etc. Plus you don't have to listen to the usually awful commentary (engine noise is seldom present anyway).
