“The Quaint Old Village of AMBERLEY, ENGLAND”
Here is another of my travelogue type videos (so no racing hydroplane boats or planes as in some of my other videos! LOL). This video is about the small village of Amberley, which has about 500 residents, and is located in the Horsham District of West Sussex, in Southern England. Most of the structures here were built in the 16th to 18th century, when Amberley was a farming community located on the main coaching road between Arundel and London. (I’ve done a video about Arundel Castle (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s7jZ0ggnC3w) and a video about the Cathedral of Our Lady & St. Philip Howard in Arundel (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O4vuRQidKBw), if you’d like to check those out too).
There are approximately 55,000 thatched structures in England, and the village of Amberley is noted for its many thatched buildings. Wikipedia has a great web page about thatched roofs at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thatch.
Amberley Castle (current website http://www.amberleycastle.co.uk/) used to be owned by Bishops from nearby Chichester, who used it as a hunting lodge and retreat. The castle is now a luxury country hotel that “offers 19 luxurious bedrooms and suites, many with four-poster beds and all featuring Jacuzzi bathrooms. Facilities include two restaurants, lounge areas, tennis court, croquet lawn, gardens and lakes, 18-hole professional putting course and a stunning thatched roof tree house complete with rope bridge”.
The nave of St. Michael’s Church was built around 1140, and additional construction done around 1230. The faded wall paintings shown in this video were done around the 12-13th century, and depict scenes from the life of Christ.
The song I used for the video is “Heartland” by Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young. I went to the reunion concert of this group a few years ago and it was an amazing evening :) :) I couldn’t, however, fully grasp the reality that SOOOOO many years had passed since I used to listen to this group when I was going to the university “way back when”!! LOL . . . “tempus fugits” . . .

Went for a run offroad, the video isn't that interesting but you must see the views. Which unfortunately the camera/encoding/etc really don't do it justice.

“Arundel Castle”, in Arundel, West Sussex, England
Welcome to Arundel Castle, in Arundel, West Sussex, England . . . I love wandering around old castles in Europe. The Arundel Castle was "remodeled" and expanded around 1300AD, and the initial castle built around 1100AD . . . it's always interesting to me how castles were often times remodeled WELL before the United States was even in EXISTENCE! :)
For more info on Arundel Castle (one of my favorite castles), please check out:
http://www.arundelcastle.org/_pages/01_castle.htm
In addition to the castle (which also has a restaurant), the grounds include a beautiful old chapel, and gardens, and the town of Arundel is the quintessential old English town, which also has a beautiful large cathedral called “Cathedral of Our Lady & St. Philip Howard” that I also did a video on. Here are the video links to the Cathedral video on both YouTube and LiveVideo:

"My Favorite Romantic Song of All Time"
This is my favorite romantic song of all time . . . Simon & Garfunkel's "For Emily, Whenever I May Find Her", with Paul Simon's emotive lyrics and amazing guitar playing, and Art Garfunkel's great voice . . . I wanted to do this tribute video for my all time favorite romantic song, on the 40th anniversary of its original release in the Oct. 10, 1966 album "Parsley, Sage, Rosemary & Thyme" (altho' in MY mind, it is NOT even REMOTELY possible this song came out over four DECADES ago!!! GEEZ!! . . . "tempus fugits"!!) . . . this song was one of S&G's less popular ones "wayyyy back when I was growing up" (you KNOW you're old when you start using THAT phrase! LOL), but the vivid mental images this song's romantic lyrics call up are SOOO powerful and beautiful . . . the photos I put with the music are ones I took in Southern England during various seasons . .
Here's a link to a video of S&G singing this wonderful song:

"A Rainy Day At The Seaside In Brighton, England"
I always enjoy visiting the seashore in the countries I visit. Here are some video clips taken on the southern shore of England, at Brighton. The really interesting thing here is that there is almost NO sand on their beaches!! . . . only PEBBLES!
The song is “Everytime It Rains” by Ace of Base.

“TONBRIDGE CASTLE”, in Tonbridge, England
Here is a video about another of the wonderful old English castles . . . this one in the charming town of Tonbridge, in Southern England . . . not to be confused with nearby “Tunbridge Wells”, altho’ “Tonbridge” WAS originally called “Tunbridge”, but later changed to Tonbridge to help minimize at least SOME of the confusion, with nearby Tunbridge Wells LOL, but, BUT . . . you still need to be careful when buying TRAIN tickets, so as not to get a ticket to the wrong place! :)
I visited this castle during the off season, so I had the interior of the castle TOTALLY to myself for the hour I was wandering around inside, so it was great walking in all the rooms and stairways, trying to visualize the people, and their lifestyle, that used to live here and defend it from attacks since it was first constructed in the 11th Century. The “Gatehouse”, which is the main visual topic of this video, was constructed in the 13th Century.
Being a retired architect, I found it REALLY interesting to learn that the architect for this castle and for a series of other castles for the same royal client, did SUCH a good job designing “state of the art” castles for him, that the royal client had the architect KILLED after the architect completed his work, rather than run the risk of the architect then going to OTHER clients to design similarly great defensive castles for THEM!! so geez . . . talk about an UNGRATEFUL CLIENT!
After the castle was built, the basement was used to store food for the winter months. The food and beverages 700 years ago would have included such things as smoked meats, garlic and herbs, barrels of wine, beer, salted fish, baskets of wheat, chestnuts, etc.
Swords in those days were cleaned in sawdust and sand, arrows with metal tips stuck in a barrel of sand to avoid rusting. Chain mail, which was greasy, muddy and bloody from battles, was washed in a mixture of sand, gravel and water, then hung up to dry inside a cloth covering.
Here’s a link to a LOT!! more history on the castle and surrounding area:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tonbridge
and,
Here’s a link to other websites with lots of info:

and,
http://www.tonbridge-kent.com/Amenit/castle.htm
and,
Here’s a link to the official castle website: http://www.tonbridgecastle.org/cgi-bin/buildpage.pl?mysql=2
The song I chose for the video is “Indian Boy” by Brulé. The song seems to go really well with the peaceful tranquility of this castle, where so much death and violence occurred so many years ago. Some Tonbridge locals say that there have been numerous ghost sightings at the castle, which wouldn’t be surprising, given how many people died violent deaths there. I felt I was being watched the entire time I was inside the castle on my own, but that was probably because of the presence of the security surveillance cameras! LOL

It’s all about “ENGLAND ROUNDABOUTS!!”
I’m back in England for another three weeks, so here’s the first video in my latest England series.
Results released in September 2007, from a nationwide United States study, indicate that “drivers waste nearly an entire work week each year sitting in traffic on the way to and from their jobs.” ( http://www.cnn.com/2007/US/09/18/traffic.congestion.ap/index.html )
That of course doesn’t include time wasted by people during the REST of their driving time. A LOT of that irrevocably wasted time out of your life is spent at TRAFFIC LIGHTS!
Therefore . . . I LOVE driving in England, because the English (and various other countries in Europe and Great Britain) make MINIMAL use of traffic lights, and WIDESPREAD use of ROUNDABOUTS, and the English drivers are PROS at the intricate “dance” that goes on at roundabouts.
Here is a video showin’ (in fast motion) how the drivers use their roundabouts!
The song is “Spinning Around” by Kylie Minogue.

“RIDING THE RAILS” in England
I’ve always had a fascination with trains . . . . . I was fortunate to grow up in a time when, as a kid, I could still see the incredible, massive, old, powerful, smelly, noisy, visceral, menacing, WONNNNDERFUL steam locomotives. . . it was always an amazing experience as a kid, watching these aging behemoths arriving at a station . . . you could hear these monsters coming from a LONG, LONG ways off, and could see the smoke and steam from the smokestacks, announcing the eminent arrival of these brutes . . . I was always in awe of the sheer size of the locomotives and vividly remember having to look WAYYYY up to the top of the huge driver wheels . . . . . . to watch these locomotives arrive at a railroad station was always “An Event”, so I spent a LOT of time at my nearby railroad station watching these trains come and go . . .
Then the steam locomotives came less and less often . . . as they were replaced by, in my opinion, the boring, sterilized, pasteurized, homogenized, understated modern Diesel-Electric Locomotives we see everywhere in the USA today, as the old steam locomotives went the way of the slide rule and buggy whip . . .
“Tempus Fugits” . . . so yeah, anyway, I still love trains tho’ :) :) (I just miss those old behemoths, most of which have long since been trashed and melted down :( )
In later years, before I could afford a car, I would hop slow moving freight trains to ride back and forth short distances to places I needed to go . . . . not “QUITE” the safest way to travel, but it was sure lots of FUN!! :) The “game” of course became to see where my “comfort level” ended, i.e., at what speed the train would get up to, before I felt it would become UNsafe to jump off without falling, and thereby risking accompanying body abrasions, contusions, concussions, or worse LOL . . . I’m still here today, with all body parts (and lifelong adrenaline junkie attitude) still attached and in working order, so guess it all worked out OK :)
“ “Tempus Fugits” . . . so yeah, anyway” (Part Two) . . . part of the joy I have in England is that they’ve got a wonderful train system that connects SOOOOOOO many great places to visit, and, AND. . . . their trains almost always RUN ON TIME!!!, versus America’s Amtrak system where trains can OFTEN be MANNNY hours late!
But I digress (again :) ) . . .
So this video is a brief “homage” to the joy of “Riding the Rails”, and to the “ghosts” of the old steam locomotive “forefathers” which still haunt the rails, if you simply open your minds enough to see and hear them :) :) . . . . .
The music for the video is two versions of “Homeward Bound”, one by Simon and Garfunkel, and the other by Willie Nelson with Waylon Jennings.
