Japanese Title: Mewtwo's Counterattack
English Title: Pokemon: The First Movie: Mewtwo Strikes Back
Japanese Theatrical Release Date: July 18, 1998
USA Theatrical Release Date: November 10, 1999
In Japanese with English subtitles.
This is the uncut Japanese version of the first Pokemon movie, and it is presented in it's original aspect ratio of 1.85:1
The most notable difference from this version to the American dubbed version is the omission of the "Mewtwo's Origin" sequence. This sequence was edited out of all foreign releases, and inculded only in the Japanese version. That 11 minute sequence was later dubbed into English and done as a seperate short, "The Origin of Mewtwo".
There are 2 versions of this film in Japanese. The 2nd version (which was later used for the English dub) contained re-done animation and new computer generated effects. The 1st version, as shown here, did not have any of that.
In my own personal opinion, this version of the film is WAY better than the english version done by 4Kids Entertainment- for many reasons. This version fleshes out Mewtwo more, and gives his character credibility by stating a reason why he became so evil. The dubbed english version just forces us to accept that Mewtwo is an evil Pokemon, and makes us think that there was really no reason to think why it became so evil in the first place. Another thing is that the original script for this film is way better than the english adaptation done by 4Kids Entertainment. But what I am about to write is the biggest difference of this version to the English dub. In this version, it is clearly stated that there is no reason for each Pokemon to fight each other, and this happened only because the cloned Pokemon were ordered by Mewtwo to fight the original Pokemon in order to see who was strongest. But in the english dubbed version, they kept that idea, but added a moral which destroyed the film (for me) and threw away the credibility of the entire Pokemon franchise. There was a "fighting is wrong" moral, and to convey that, the awful song "Brother, My Brother" was inserted into that version. This is the primary reason why that version was the worst Pokemon movie in the English language. But other than that, please enjoy this, for me it was like watching a movie for the very first time.
