The Companion Guide to ZEITGEIST, Part 1 is a 49-page ebook containing a scientific investigation of some of the facts from Part 1 of the ZEITGEIST movie, dealing with the comparisons of ancient religions and Christianity. In this instantly downloadable and printable PDF file are answers to the following questions: Who are the Egyptian gods Horus and Set? Why does the battle between Horus and Set sound like that of Jesus and Satan? Was the baby Horus really born on December 25th, just like Jesus is traditionally supposed to have been? This ebook contains 11 pages of research on this important subject. Was Horus's mother truly a virgin called Isis-Mery? A 10-page discussion of the virginal status of Horus's mother, including citations of ancient texts in their original languages, with translations. Bast The Egyptian Goddess

Bast_The_Egyptian_GoddessIn Egyptian mythology, Bast (also spelt Ubasti, and Pasht) is an ancient goddess, worshipped at least since the Second Dynasty, for whom the centre of her cult was in Per-Bast (Bubastis in greek), which was named after her. Originally she was viewed as the protector goddess of Lower Egypt, and consequently depicted as a fierce lion. Indeed, her name means (female) devourer. As protectress, she was seen as defender of the pharaoh, and consequently of the chief god, Ra, who was a solar deity, gaining her the titles Lady of flame, and Eye of Ra. Later scribes sometimes named her Bastet, a variation on Bast consisting of an additional feminine suffix to the one already present, thought to have been added to emphasise pronunciation. Since Bastet would literally mean (female) of the ointment jar, Bast gradually became thought of as the goddess of perfumes, earning the title perfumed protector. In connection with this, when Anubis became the god of embalming, Bast, as goddess of ointment, became thought of as his mother, although this association was broken in later years, when Anubis became thought of as Nephthys' son.

Maps of Meaning 4: Games People Must Play

Maps_of_Meaning_4:_Games_People_Must_PlayPart 5 Theme: The ideas encoded in religion and mythology emerged from the bottom up, not the top down. This means they were not planned or abstractly conceptualized, in their initial forms. Instead, religious ideas emerged from a platform whose structure was defined by collective behavior. Ordered collective behavior has a game-like structure, and some games are better than others. Sophisticated religious narratives outline the best possible games.

Blazing RA

Blazing_RAIn ancient Egyptian culture the Sun was considered the manifestation of god. He was called Ra. Actually his full name is Ra - Atum - Khepri. This name represents the three stages of the Sun. Khepri - the rising Sun, Ra - the Sun at the zenith (noon) and Atum -the setting Sun. It is believed that Ra created the first divine couple, Shu and Tefnut, who are the parents of the earth and sky. The Egyptians also believed that man was born from the tears of Ra, and were the god's cattle. So since man is created in his image and is issued from his flesh, the earth was created to provide care and support for mankind.

The Story of God - No God - but God? (2 of 3)

The_Story_of_God_-_No_God_-_but_God?_(2_of_3)Robert Winston introduces the second episode of The Story of God at the tomb of Abraham in Hebron. ‘According to the Bible,’ he tells us, ‘Abraham was the first person to believe in one God.’ This is a curious comment since the Bible never makes that claim. It also fails to allow for the first eleven chapters of Genesis which refers to such notable characters as Adam, Eve, Enoch and Noah (all predating Abraham) with the constant assumption that there is only one God. Estimates for when Zoroaster lived vary widely, with most scholars suggesting 1000-600 BC – which is later than Abraham. Abraham’s tomb is therefore a good place to start, given that these three faiths look to him as their ‘spiritual father.’ It is closely guarded by Israeli security forces, and Jews and Muslims are segregated so that they face it (veiled behind a curtain) from opposite sides. It is a powerful metaphor of how the common heritage of Jews and Muslims is the very thing which causes so much hostility between them: ‘A symbol of our common heritage and a barrier which keeps us apart.’ ‘Monotheism begins with a choice: God’s,’ we’re told. ‘Jews, Christians and Muslims have all had to wrestle with this demanding God’ – a God who said to Abraham, ‘Walk before me and be perfect’. Their wrestling has resulted in them coming up with some very different ideas about who this God is and what he expects of us.’

Pegasus

PegasusIn Greek mythology, winged horse, son of Poseidon, god of the sea, and the Gorgon Medusa. Pegasus sprang from Medusa's neck when she was killed by the hero Perseus. Shortly after its birth, the magic steed struck the ground on Mount Helicon, and on the spot a spring, later sacred to the Muses and believed to be a source for poetic inspiration, began to flow. All longed in vain to catch and tame the creature, and this became the obsession of Bellerophon, prince of Corinth. On the advice of a seer, Bellerophon spent a night in the temple of the goddess Athena. As he slept, the goddess appeared to him with a golden bridle and told him that it would enable him to capture Pegasus. When Bellerophon awoke, he found the golden bridle beside him, and with it he easily captured and tamed the winged horse. Pegasus thereafter proved to be a great help to Bellerophon and aided the hero in his adventures against the Amazons and the Chimaera. Bellerophon was overcome by his own pride, however. When he attempted to fly to the top of Olympus to join the gods, the wise horse threw him, leaving Bellerophon to wander disconsolately about, hated by the gods. Pegasus found shelter in the Olympian stalls and was entrusted by Zeus with bringing him his lightning and thunderbolts.
