Meihuazhuang is said to belong to the Kunlun school and together with Baguaquan (a style of no relation to the famous Baguazhang popular today) comprise the fundamental boxing styles of the Kunlun sect1. In many of the rural areas in which meihuazhuang has been practiced for centuries, the founding of the sect is attributed to the mythological figure Yun Pan. Villagers often say Meihuazhuang existed since the beginning and folk legends claim that its history extends to the Han dynasty. Meihuazhuang's oldest written records, genealogies and textual date to the records of 2nd generation master Zhang Sansheng. While these writings have been accurately dated by historians to 1588, the style itself is undoubtedly much older2. Based on historical records, it is known that in 1588, Zhang Sansheng began his studies of meihuazhuang publicly in Xuzhou, Jiangsu province. His student, Zou Hongyi, of the third generation, was born at the end of the Ming dynasty. By the 9th year of the Qing Dynasty emperor Qianlong's reign, Zou Hongyi went north to teach martial arts and settled in Mazhuangqiao village in Pingxiang county, Hebei. Chang Quan or the long-style Chinese Chuan is the general term for a dozen schools of Chuan. The main characteristics of the long-style Chuan are expansiveness and gracefulness in posture and agility and speed in movement. Long-style boxers fight to the extreme of their arms' length. They move fast, jump high and far and combine hardness and softness, fast and slow moves, motions and stillness. Their movements are clearly rhythmical. Their generation of energy is powerful and the origin and outlet of the energy are clear. The bones and ligaments of the long-style boxers are compatible with their movements and actions. Chang Quan is more suitable to youngsters who can enhance strength, speed, agility, elasticity and endurance through exercise and practice. It helps develop the physique and teach the techniques and skills in offence and defense.

The hand in the shape of the claw is used to apply pressure to an opponent's joints, veins, and pressure points, thus controlling and immobilizing him. Eagle Claw is ideal for both men and women of any size because great body strength is not required to be effective in a defensive situation. Using various hand strengthening exercises the claw is developed to have a vice-like grip and a burning sensation as if hot coals were being pressed into the opponent. Eagle Claw strength is based on finger power, finger joint power, and wrist power. Without all three the claw is ineffective. A well developed claw can control an opponent without injury, causing damage only when unavoidable. In this way Eagle Claw is a highly moral system that provides very effective self-defense without unnecessary injury to an opponent. At the core of all Eagle Claw techniques are the principles of yin and yang. Punches and palm strikes are executed relaxed, but firm, until the end when the hand and the arm are hardened. This gives the technique a snapping action that adds power without a great need for strength. Movements are fast then slow, yielding then advancing, depending on the need of the situation and the technique to be employed. The student learns to at once be strong as a mountain, and then as yielding as a blade of grass in the wind. The Eagle Claw system includes: 25 fist forms over 25 weapon forms over 25 partner forms and the 108 locking techniques. Forms must be practiced diligently until the movements and techniques are perfected. It's in the forms that the student unlocks the secrets of Eagle Claw. Every step and hand technique in the forms have a self-defense application. Practicing the forms also develops discipline and focus in the student, advantages that become invaluable in everyday life. Three of the forms are considered Master forms and contain the most intricate techniques of the Eagle Claw system. It wasn't easy for me to upload this. I had to capture the video using Capture Me, and record the audio using Audacity. I couldn't record it off my camera or directly download the FLV, convert it, and trim it. I synced the audio and video and trimmed them a bit in Final Cut. If you want to see this logo in better quality, go watch Kung Fu Panda in theaters. This shouldn't really be considered a variant. It should be known as an exclusive logo because it's not a modification of the current DWA logo, it's completely different.
