The homes are surrounded by lush land and rainforest with fantastic views from all angles. Although the area of gamboa is vital to the maintenance of the panama canal it is also famous for its diverse plants, trees, rainforest and wildllife. It is also great for individuals who enjoy fishing, especially for rainbow bass. The real estate here can be bought for a fraction of the cost in other areas. So, if you are looking for paradise, look no further. Gamboa has it all! And the price is right!

Formed by an earthen dam across the Chagres River to keep the water 85 feet above sea level, the water runs downhill to fill the locks. No pumps, no power other than the force of gravity! Fact: It will take about 52 million gallons of water to float your Holland America ship through the locks.

http://www.lovepanamarealestate.com/PanamaCityPanama.html Along the route of the canal there is a series of 3 sets of locks, the Gatun, Pedro Miguel and the Miraflores locks. At Gatun there are 2 parallel sets of locks each consisting of 3 flights. This set of locks lift ships a total of 26 metres. The locks are constructed from concrete from which the aggregate originated from the excavated rock at Culebra. This was then crushed and used as aggregate. In excess of 1.53 million cubic metres of concrete was used in the construction of the Gatun locks alone.

Lake Gatun is where boats passing from one ocean to the other have to pass through and the river chagres is where the canal's freshwater supply comes from. Without this the center would not have enough water, due to the lock system in place.

At 262 square miles, this is the largest manmade lake in the world. Vessels from around the globe were at anchor, waiting their turn to descend through Gatun Locks. In the distance, you can see the Gatun Dam on the Chagres River--the source of the electrical power to operate the canal. Lush rainforests surround the islands ,and the wildlife is spectacular. I had the opportunity of seeing these magnificent creatures (capuhin monkeys) also known as "white-faced monkeys" in their natural setting. These friendly little primates welcome tourist, because they know this means food. It was amazng seeing them climb out onto branches or onto the boat itself in search for this food and greedily but affectionally grab food from our hands.
