Exodus 16 - 18
Satan always attacks when we are most vulnerable. Amalek pounced on Israel when the nation was weary. We learn about that on today’s edition of QUICK STUDY.
FASCINATING FACTS
Today we learn about manna in Exodus 16-18. Manna was a small round flake used for bread and said to have tasted like wafers made with honey. It was either a direct creation of God or a natural product miraculously multiplied. It fell with the dew each night. Each person was allowed 7 pints per day. There was enough on the 6th day to last over the Sabbath. The provision of manna began one month after Israel left Egypt and lasted until they crossed over the Jordan some 40 years later. Then it ceased as suddenly as it had begun.
PRAYER POWER
Prayer and Bible reading are like two oars of a boat. If we only use one, we go in circles. We must employ both. There are 50 major prayers recorded in the Bible, some that were answered and some that were refused. By studying these "profiles in prayer" we can learn much for our own lives. Solomon’s prayer for the Temple dedication is found in 1 Kings 8:22-52. Deep within the dark streams of Mammoth Cave, Kentucky, live fish who have lost their sight. These fish have lived for centuries in the darkened waters of the cave and their optic nerves have become atrophied. Atrophy, or the wasting away of muscles through disuse, is a fairly common condition among living things. Men also fall prey to a spiritual atrophy. Charles Darwin admitted he lost his love for poetry and music, once dear to him, because he failed to develop them. In the same way, we can lose our vital prayer power through disuse. We must simply stay "prayed up" at all times. This is one of the strong points of Solomon’s temple dedication prayer. As he stood before the congregation, the king pleaded with God to always hear the people whenever and wherever they pray. Solomon’s prayer was more for the people’s benefit than God’s. Solomon knew God would certainly hear His people. But Solomon wanted to remind Israel they should always pray, in good times and bad. His message is well taken. To prevent spiritual atrophy we must maintain a strong prayer life. This is why we set aside a daily time to commune with God. Prayer practice keeps our spiritual muscles toned up for any crisis.
GOD’S WORD FOR TODAY
While the Bible reading today is Exodus 16-18, Ron’s specific focus for this study is Exodus 17:8-16. Here is God’s Word: 8The Amalekites came and attacked the Israelites at Rephidim. 9Moses said to Joshua, "Choose some of our men and go out to fight the Amalekites. Tomorrow I will stand on top of the hill with the staff of God in my hands." 10So Joshua fought the Amalekites as Moses had ordered, and Moses, Aaron and Hur went to the top of the hill. 11As long as Moses held up his hands, the Israelites were winning, but whenever he lowered his hands, the Amalekites were winning. 12When Moses’ hands grew tired, they took a stone and put it under him and he sat on it. Aaron and Hur held his hands up—one on one side, one on the other—so that his hands remained steady till sunset. 13So Joshua overcame the Amalekite army with the sword. 14Then the LORD said to Moses, "Write this on a scroll as something to be remembered and make sure that Joshua hears it, because I will completely blot out the memory of Amalek from under heaven." 15Moses built an altar and called it The LORD is my Banner. 16He said, "For hands were lifted up to the throne of the LORD. The LORD will be at war against the Amalekites from generation to generation."
THE MESSAGE
Hardly a month goes by but what Israel starts complaining because of the hardness of their journey. The murmuring continues for 40 years and angers God. Conveniently forgetting the hardships of Egyptian bondage, they only remember the few pleasantries they experienced there. Here we learn: (1) When we complain about the leadership God has given, we are complaining about the Lord; (2) All our ba

Exodus 29-31
We must have a regular giving plan. Israel made offerings daily so they would always remember God’s goodness. We learn about that on today’s edition of QUICK STUDY.
FASCINATING FACTS
Today we learn about the Sabbath in Exodus 29-31. As early as the second chapter of Genesis, one day in seven was set apart for rest and blessing. God tells Israel they are to formally observe the Sabbath in remembrance of their covenant with God. Work was prohibited on this day. In fact, the ban on labor is even suggested by the very word Sabbath. That word is derived from a Hebrew verb meaning "cease" or "abstain" and only the secondary meaning is "rest." One of the accusations the Pharisees made against Jesus, demanding His death, was breaking laws of the Sabbath.
God wishes to display His power in our world. Elijah saw God’s mighty power when he prayed in 1 Kings 18:20-39. A cynical French astronomer once bragged to J. W. Hawley, "I have swept the universe with my telescope, and I find no God." to this Hawley simply replied, "That is as unreasonable as for me to say I have taken my violin apart, have examined each piece and I find no music." Hawley’s words were wise and silenced the skeptic. Most of the time we do have to notice the subtle causes and effects of life to see God. However, there are times when He makes His presence know most dramatically. Elijah had spent his life trying to convince a straying nation to come back to the one true God. Now it was time for a showdown. Gathered on Mount Carmel, the helpless prophets of Baal danced and chanted all day for a display from their god. After they exhausted their resources, Elijah told them to step aside. In his brief prayer Elijah called on God to show Himself as the true God. God did so and revival broke out. In our day God is again displaying His power in the world. These are times of great revival and we are seeing dramatic miracles in ministry. Pray with us today that God will continue to move that men may know "this day that thou art God in Israel."
GOD’S WORD FOR TODAY
While the Bible reading today is Exodus 29-31, Ron’s specific focus for this study is Exodus 29:38-45. Here is God’s Word: 38This is what you are to offer on the altar regularly each day: two lambs a year old. 39Offer one in the morning and the other at twilight. 40With the first lamb offer a tenth of an ephah of fine flour mixed with a quarter of a hin of oil from pressed olives, and a quarter of a hin of wine as a drink offering. 41Sacrifice the other lamb at twilight with the same grain offering and its drink offering as in the morning—a pleasing aroma, an offering made to the LORD by fire.
42"For the generations to come this burnt offering is to be made regularly at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting before the LORD. There I will meet you and speak to you; 43there also I will meet with the Israelites, and the place will be consecrated by my glory. 44So I will consecrate the Tent of Meeting and the altar and will consecrate Aaron and his sons to serve me as priests. 45Then I will dwell among the Israelites and be their God. 46They will know that I am the LORD their God, who brought them out of Egypt so that I might dwell among them. I am the LORD their God.
THE MESSAGE
Because God is high and holy, His people must recognize that in their worship. The priests are to be consecrated and be "holy" men set apart for sacred service. They represent God to the people and represent the people before God. As such, their calling is high and they must never violate that calling. Here we learn: (1) God’s promises are always conditional–we must do our part an
