Germany and other European countries are using public trams to haul containers through city traffic more efficiently than trucks. Energy efficiency. That is what it is all about. Who is to gain. Less traffic congestion, pollution, noise pollution, maintenance, wear and tear. Oh, and it's cheaper -especially for long distances. Oh, and it will be cheaper by each year, as trains run on electricity, which can be produced in various ways....oppose to air freight, and most trucks. Ships can take more, but take longer time.
