The Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area is located just a few miles west of Las Vegas and encompasses 197,000 acres within the Mojave Desert. Red Rock is an area of worldwide geologic interest and beauty. The most significant geologic feature of Red Rock Canyon is the Keystone Thrust Fault. A thrust fault is a fracture in the earth's crust where one rock plate is thrust horizontally over another. About 65 million years ago, it is believed that two of the earth's crustal plates collided with such force that part of one plate was shoved up and over younger sandstones. This thrust contact is clearly defined by the sharp contrast between the grey limestones and the red sandstones. The Keystone Thrust Fault extends from the Cottonwoood Fault (along the Pahrump Highway) 13 miles northward to the vicinity of La Madre Mountain, where it is obscured by more complex faulting. Rock art within Red Rock comes in two varieties, petroglyphs and pictographs. The difference between the two types is the manner in which they were made. Petroglyphs were pecked into the surface of the rock. Pictographs were painted on the rock. In Red Rock Canyon a coating of dark "desert varnish" on lighter sandstone provides the perfect medium for petroglyphs, which are the most common of the two types of rock art found at Red Rock. If you want to discover some petroglyphs firsthand, the Red Spring area has a wide variety of different styles on the cliff faces and fallen boulders. This is a family slideshow that I made for my adopted daughter Mary Cruz. She came to live with me 4 months ago. She comes from a very poor family in Mexico. I am sharing this video with you because we sometimes take things for granted. I thank God for all the blessings I get everyday. She visited San Francisco for the first time 3 weeks ago. She said something that caught my attention she said. “My eyes hurt to see so much beauty in on place, I wish my brain keep this pictures for ever” I had been in San Francisco hundreds of times, I know is beautiful but I think I was taking things for granted. We have to start looking the beauty around us; every place in the world has beautiful things to look at. Enjoy them all.
