This song was written by Young while on tour in his hotel room after he saw a news broadcast of Richard Nixon leaving the hospital and looking very distraught because of his wife Pat Nixon's stroke. Young went and performed the song live that very night after writing it. A moment of compassion for President Nixon.

This is a song Neil Young wrote to honor the lives of all troops fighting the war on terror. It is on the Living With War album. My uncle served in Vietnam when I was a 9-10 year old. We were very close to him. He would come home on leave and tell us horror stories about what he had seen and experienced over there. He was 19-20 at the time. Every time he would go back we feared he wouldn't come home. When he called me and told me he was finally home for good my 10 year old heart lept for joy. That was one of my happiest childhood memories. My story has a happy ending. My heart goes out to all people who have lost loved ones in all wars. May they always be remembered with honor.

I had the idea for a song about trying to explain the concept of Hate to my children and this is the song I ended up with. Perhaps the most important song I have written and it's dedicated to my kids. It's a long one but there was so much I had to say to them that I couldn't make it shorter. What a beautiful song by Ian Tyson. I love Ian's original rendition of this classic but my first exposure was Neil Young's cover from his Comes A Time album. I learned to play the song by ear back then and it still is one of my favorites. I also enjoyed hearing Neil Young tell the story about his first exposure to Ian's original on the Heart Of Gold DVD. Absolutely a stunning live performance on that DVD. Young reunites all the Gone With The Wind orchestra players to play with him on that DVD. This is my cover of the Neil Young version:
