In Greek mythology, winged horse, son of Poseidon, god of the sea, and the Gorgon Medusa. Pegasus sprang from Medusa's neck when she was killed by the hero Perseus. Shortly after its birth, the magic steed struck the ground on Mount Helicon, and on the spot a spring, later sacred to the Muses and believed to be a source for poetic inspiration, began to flow. All longed in vain to catch and tame the creature, and this became the obsession of Bellerophon, prince of Corinth. On the advice of a seer, Bellerophon spent a night in the temple of the goddess Athena. As he slept, the goddess appeared to him with a golden bridle and told him that it would enable him to capture Pegasus. When Bellerophon awoke, he found the golden bridle beside him, and with it he easily captured and tamed the winged horse. Pegasus thereafter proved to be a great help to Bellerophon and aided the hero in his adventures against the Amazons and the Chimaera. Bellerophon was overcome by his own pride, however. When he attempted to fly to the top of Olympus to join the gods, the wise horse threw him, leaving Bellerophon to wander disconsolately about, hated by the gods. Pegasus found shelter in the Olympian stalls and was entrusted by Zeus with bringing him his lightning and thunderbolts.

The Story of God - God of the Gaps (3 of 3)
The third and final episode of "The Story of God" begins with Robert Winston in St Peter’s cathedral in Geneva. This, he tells us, was the birthplace of the Protestant Reformation 450 years ago. The Medieval statues and wall paintings were removed and the congregation ‘set out to know God directly, with only their Bibles to guide them.’ The reformation, ‘redefined man’s relationship with God by replacing the mysteries of faith with the certainties of religious conviction.‘ Winston’s tone hints that he doesn’t see this as progress, and the remainder of the episode confirms this as he laments the problems caused by certainty in the debate between science and faith. Winston travels to the United States to visit a "Creationalist Museum" which depicts a history that is only a few thousand years old.

The Phoenix
Every morning at dawn, the sun god would stop his chariot to listen to the bird sing a beautiful song while it bathed in the well.
Only one phoenix exists at a time. When the bird felt its death was near, every 500 to 1,461 years, it would build a nest of aromatic wood and set it on fire. The bird then was consumed by the flames.
A new phoenix sprang forth from the pyre. It embalmed the ashes of its predecessor in an egg of myrrh and flew with it to Heliopolis, "city of the sun," where the egg was deposited on the altar of the sun god. In Egypt, it was usually depicted as a heron, but in the classic literature as a peacock or an eagle.

The Voice
Celtic Mythology
"O Lady of the Fair Hair,
Sing to me of the fair ancient land.
Yours divine voice
Whispers the poetry of magic
that flow through the wind,
Like sweet-tasting water of the Boyne.
"Girls, forever young and beautiful,
Dancing around the broken dun,
Where long forgotten heroes
sang of victory
And drank ales
to old memories.
"Sing to me one last time,
Goddess of the Fair Hair,
Before my old ear fail me.
Let me see you dance,
Before your beauty fade away
from my failing sight."

Pandora's Box
According to Edith Hamilton in Mythology the source of all misfortune was Pandora's curiosity. "The gods presented her with a box into which each had put something harmful, and forbade her ever to open it. Then they sent her to Epimetheus, who took her gladly although Prometheus had warned him never to accept anything from Zeus. He took her, and afterward when that dangerous thing, a woman, was his, he understood how good his brother's advice had been. For Pandora, like all women, was possessed of a lively curiosity. She had to know what was in the box. One day she lifted the lidand out flew plagues innumerable, sorrow and mischief for mankind. In terror Pandora clapped the lid down, but too late. One good thing, however, was thereHope. It was the only good the casket had held among the many evils, and it remains to this day mankind's sole comfort in misfortune."

Electric Universe - 5 of 7
The most merciful thing in the world ... is the inability of the human mind to correlate all its contents... The sciences, each straining in its own direction, have hitherto harmed us little; but someday the piecing together of dissociated knowledge will open up such terrifying vistas of reality... That we shall either go mad from the revelation or flee from the deadly light into the peace and safety of a new dark age.

Blazing RA
In ancient Egyptian culture the Sun was considered the manifestation of god. He was called Ra. Actually his full name is Ra - Atum - Khepri. This name represents the three stages of the Sun. Khepri - the rising Sun, Ra - the Sun at the zenith (noon) and Atum -the setting Sun. It is believed that Ra created the first divine couple, Shu and Tefnut, who are the parents of the earth and sky. The Egyptians also believed that man was born from the tears of Ra, and were the god's cattle. So since man is created in his image and is issued from his flesh, the earth was created to provide care and support for mankind.

Could paganism have achieved political stability in the absence of Christianity?
This is an equally lengthy follow-up to my video "The growth of Christianity: Word of mouth or political utilitarianism?" and is a response to a question addressed to me by a friend.
Please note that I use the word "Aasatru" in this video in the context of "pagan Scandinavian beliefs in the Aesir", rather than its neo-pagan, modern meaning.
