In an already beleaguered U.S. Economy, the Charlotte Mecklenburg School system, has picked a bad time for an $18 million funding shortfall. As a result, the CMS will have to cut 331 jobs to make a $24 million cut against its budget for next year. After a May hiring freeze, the CMS was advised to make room and take 8% off the books for the upcoming school year. ,, will result in larger class sizes and affect student progression. Earlier in the year, 26 Assistant Principal positions were eliminated, leaving 3 AP’s for every 1,400 students. With this wave of cuts, the teacher to student ratio will increase from 1 for every 21 students, to 1 principal for every 22. The Charlotte Mecklenburg School system has over 19,700 people at work, and will offer reassignments or relocation within the district to those displaced.
